This class follows and explores the techniques and tools discussed in the Sallie Tomato Book - A Field Guide: Making Bags
The three bags from the book that will be made in the class are :
       Quilted Pouch
       Fold-over Crossbody Bag
       Beginner Tote

Class Outline

Session 1: Introduction to Bag Making & Fabric Fundamentals

  • Overview of different types of bags and their uses

  • Explore and touch a curated swatch collection of fabrics to understand textures, thicknesses, and structure

  • Hands-on Project: Construct a small Quilted pouch  from precut materials

Session 2: Hardware, Zippers & Notions

  • Learn about different types of bag hardware and how they’re used (samples will be provided)

  • Intro to notions: zippers and specialty tools

  • Hands-on Project: Construct a fold-over crossbody bag  from precut materials

Session 3: Catch-Up & Construction

  • Finish any work from previous sessions

  • Review techniques and get feedback on previous projects

  • Begin the Beginner Tote project 

Session 4: Complete the Beginner Tote & Wrap-Up

  • Continue construction and finishing details of the tote

  • Celebrate completed work with a mini show-and-tell

  • Discuss next steps in bag making and additional resources
